Nominate subspecies of Anas georgica. Resident breeding on South Georgia, distinctly smaller, stockier, darker, and more reddish brown than A. g. spinicauda, its relative of S. South America and the Falklands Islands.
Found around tidal pools and tussock ponds all around the South Georgia coastline and feeds on both plant and animal life including seal carcasses. A carnivorous duck.
South Georgia pintails nest in tussac grass, laying mostly in December- January and chicks generally fledge by late February. It is hoped populations will increase with the clearance of rats from South Georgia.
